The 302 still used a 4-inch bore, but had a shorter 3-inch stroke like the 283, affording a much higher-winding race engine. This was rumored to be the result of GM/Chevrolet's proposed buyout of the tooling and rights to the Packard V-8 engine of the mid-to-late '50's. The Packard engine was truly huge, having 5" bore centers.
